Moon · Chandra
Moon
The Moon (Chandra) represents the mind, emotions, mother, and intuition in Vedic astrology. She rules Cancer (Karka) and is exalted in Taurus. The Moon is the most important planet in Vedic astrology because she determines the Janma Nakshatra (birth star), which sets the foundation for the entire chart.
This planet does not turn retrograde.
Chandra was born from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). He married the 27 daughters of Daksha (the 27 Nakshatras) but favored Rohini above all. Daksha cursed Chandra to lose his lustre, but Shiva softened the curse — Chandra now waxes and wanes over 28 days.
The Moon governs emotions, mental peace, memory, motherly love, and the capacity to nurture. A strong Moon gives emotional stability, intuition, and adaptability. A weak Moon can cause mood swings, anxiety, restlessness, and difficulty with emotional expression.
Worship Lord Shiva on Mondays. Offer milk and white flowers to a Shivlinga. Chant "Om Som Somaya Namah" 108 times. Wear a pearl (Moti) set in silver on the little finger. Visit a temple of Goddess Durga (who is associated with the Moon) on Mondays.
