Mythology

Mangala was born from the sweat of Lord Shiva. He is also identified with Kartikeya (Skanda, Murugan), the commander of the divine army and son of Shiva and Parvati. Mars is associated with the God of War and protects dharma through righteous force.

Astrological Significance

Mars governs physical energy, courage, ambition, sexual drive, and the ability to take initiative. A strong Mars gives leadership, fearlessness, and athletic ability. A weak or afflicted Mars can cause anger, impulsiveness, accidents, or lack of drive. Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha) is a placement of Mars that affects marriage compatibility.

Remedial Measures (Upaya)

Worship Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa daily. Offer red flowers to Lord Ganesha. Chant "Om Angarakaya Namah" 108 times. Wear a red coral (Moonga) set in copper or gold on the ring finger. Observe Mangalavar Vrat (Tuesday fast).
