Depicted as a fierce Brahmin warrior with matted hair, beard, two arms holding a battle axe (parashu) and a bow. Often shown standing with one foot on a corpse or with his axe raised. He carries the qualities of both a sage (Brahmin) and a warrior (Kshatriya).

The Story

Parashurama was born as Rama Jamadagnya, the son of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka. He is a Brahmin by birth but a warrior by action — combining the spiritual power of a sage with the martial skill of a Kshatriya. The Kshatriya king Kartavirya Arjuna (with 1000 arms) once visited Jamadagni's ashram and, coveting the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu, killed the sage and stole the cow. Enraged, Parashurama took his divine axe (a gift from Lord Shiva) and vowed to wipe out the corrupt Kshatriya race. He circled the earth 21 times, killing every Kshatriya king he encountered. After his campaign, he performed a great yajna to atone for the violence and gave away all the conquered land to sage Kashyapa. He then retired to the Mahendra mountains. According to legend, he threw his axe into the sea, which caused the water to recede and revealed the land of Kerala (Parashurama Kshetra) — which he gave to Brahmins. He is one of the 7 Chiranjeevis (immortals) and is believed to be the martial arts teacher of Karna (Mahabharata) and Drona.

Significance

Parashurama is the sixth avatar of Vishnu, embodying the principle that when those in power become corrupt and oppressive, the divine must intervene with force to restore dharma. Unlike other avatars who were kings or saviors, Parashurama was a Brahmin who took up arms — challenging the social order where Kshatriyas alone could rule. His 21 campaigns against corrupt kings symbolize the unrelenting struggle against tyranny. He represents the righteous anger of the divine — necessary when peaceful means have failed. Parashurama is also credited with creating the western coast of India (Konkan and Kerala) — making him a cultural ancestor of these regions. He is still believed to be alive, awaiting the Kalki avatar at the end of Kali Yuga.
